The house
Lived in, cared for, never fussy
The Alder House was a working farm for 150 years before it became a hotel. We kept the wide pine floors, the stone hearths and the orchard, then added deep bathtubs, very good beds and a kitchen that cooks from the land around it.
There are no televisions in the rooms and no conference rooms in the barn. There is a library with a fire, a cedar sauna by the pond and a long table where breakfast lasts as long as you want it to.
Come for the orchard. Stay for the second slice of apple cake.

The Larder
Dinner from within twenty miles
Chef Samuel Ortiz cooks over an open hearth in the old dairy barn, with a menu that changes weekly. Vegetables from Fennel Hill Farm, sheep cheese from a dairy in Ghent, cider pressed from our own apples.
- Four-course hearth menu, Thursday to Monday
- Breakfast included for all hotel guests
- Hudson Valley wine and cider list
- Open to non-residents by reservation
We arrived exhausted on a Friday and left on Sunday feeling like different people. The fire was lit before we reached the room, the bed was perfect and the apple cake at breakfast deserves its own review.

The fire is already laid
Weekends book up four to six weeks ahead. Midweek is quieter, and just as lovely.
